Heads Up Battle: DaMatrix v Spudnik

I log in to BugsysClub this morning and win the first sit&go that I play (stud hi/lo). At this point Spudnik challenges me to a heads up match.

Not one to shy away from a challenge I accept - in fact, I thought it would be a piece of cake as he is one of the biggest fish on there ;)

It turned out to be World War III. After 169 hands and 66 minutes of playing we had a winner:

DaMatrix Wins.

Heads Up Challenge: DaMatrix v skinpa

The heads up challenge match between myself and winner of the January comp, skinpa, took place Saturday. With 10k starting chips each and blinds starting very low, it was a very long heads up match, lasting 169 hands of which I managed to win 78 (46%). Since I had never played my opponent, I spent the first few levels trying to gauge him. This meant that I was behind for a long period of time (never more than about 8:12k) as I used my chips to buy showdowns. This explains why I won only 19/36 at showdown (53%).

The first key hand I won was when I flopped the nut straight with T8o and slowplayed it til the river when the board paired. Skinpa must have caught trips as I managed to win a big pot:

T8o flops the straight.

Over 75% of the pots I won were uncontested. The next key hand is one of them. Making a play for the pot preflop with 72o wasn't one of my best ideas, especialy when I got called. Luckily the flop gave me hope, and my semi-bluff wasn't called leaving skinpa with about 1,700 chips:

The hammer.

Next hand, skinpa doubled when I set him all in pre with J7o against his KTo. When I didn't call his all in the following hand, my opponent was back up to 5k.

My next two hands though were KQo and AJo and I managed to win 2 uncontested pots to take skinpa back down to 1,600.

Finally, skinpa goes all-in for his 1.6k and this time I call with 93s:

DaMatrix wins.

Many thanks to skinpa for taking part - the $20 heads up challenge will return next month.

Megabux (BBP) Challenge

I found out today that Bugsys Club started a new sit & go promotion called Megabux. To test it out they began with a BBP(Bugsy Bonus Points - much like frequent player points) version.

Basically, if you place in 20 or more s&g satellites to the Megabux Final, then you are entitled, if you win the final, to 100% of a Bonus Jackpot derived from all the Megabux s&gs people played during the week. Win less than 20 s&gs and the share of the Jackpot you would be entitled to if you win the final drops according to a scale. This means that potentially part or all of the Jackpot could rollover to the next final.

When I looked at the leaderboard I discovered that one player was already on 8 wins, blitz240. Hence, I set myself a challenge to reach 20 wins before any other player. With such a big handicap, I wasn't sure if I could do it - but I felt fairly confident especially since the whole of January I have been playing mostly s&gs in order to win the Smash & Grab League.

As this was a BBP promotion, I came across a lot of players who I'd never played before: the two that stood out where blitz240 and krookedkreek.

BBP Megabux Challenge.

In order to close the 8 game lead held by blitz2004 and reach 20 wins in the fastest possible time, multitabling was required. The above screenshot shows me playing 6 s&gs at the same time. By then, I had already gained the lead with 18 wins to blitz240's 14 wins. The next two wins swiftly followed and I had completed the challenge!

The 21st "win" and table showing DaMatrix top with 20 wins.

The first BBP Megabux Final is this Sunday at 10pm UK time. Look out for an update.

**************
UPDATE:
Well, I played the final and finished 396/719 when my AA lost to KK. Congratulations to baddog13 for winning the final and 9,347 BBPs!

Where are they now?

In August 2004, The Hendon Mob Forum ran the first Search Terms competition and I won!

Each month they publish a list of the unusual search terms that people used on various search engines to find The Hendon Mob website. The ones from August were:

cock nose, lads mag, good booking, suspicious behaviour, jennifer lopez esquire, where are they now pam ayers, no-one is interested in me, tape recorder.com, saddo, property in riga, play zonka, putting course barcelona, disturbing trend teen model, jealous people who criticize, how to change gears in racing, peter the pigeon, guzzi police bike, you are not sorry, hoovering, just muppets, matthews 19. 4-6, fatima whitbread topless, and boxing fetish.

The best short story containing all of the above terms would win the competition. Here is my effort which won:

"Where are they now?" Pam Ayers (Author)

Picture the scene. The final table of the WSOZ (that's right, the World Series of Zonka) women only main event 2003, sponsored by taperecorder.com and being held as always at the "Putting Course", Barcelona. A tip off suggesting ETA would be targeting the event, as led to hundreds of police on Guzzi police bikes making part of the increased security on the lookout for suspicious behaviour around the venue.

On the buttom with the smallest stack is Jennifer Lopez. Esquire, the lads mag, sponsoring her in what is Jenny's first live Zonka tournament. Her recent single "Tu No Eres Arrepentido" (You Are Not Sorry) made it to number one in Costa Rica - her inspiration for the song came from all the bad beats the unbluffables, who are just muppets, have inflicted on her. After having no luck with saddo men, Jenny (still from the block) has had plenty of time to play Zonka (the hottest poker variant since Lowball) online. We wish her luck.

In the small blind with a medium stack stack is Peter "The Pigeon" Matthews, 19. 4-6, (1.67 to the betfairians) freely available on Pete to become WSOZ champion. A naturally gifted Zonka player and three time Formula Junior Champion who had a transexual operation especially for this women only event - hey, it's only jealous people who criticize. And anyway, he's not called The Pigeon for no reason. Peter now keeps his manhood in a little jar in front him at the table for luck. This she-man, knows how to mix it up in Zonka almost as good as he knows how to change gears in racing.

Next up on the big blind and in an effort to put off her opponents, is Fatima Whitbread topless with two big stacks in front of her which she has been using as card protectors. This former Olympian world javelin champion is said to have a boxing fetish. Lets hope she doesn't pull her punches in this final session.

A table full of freaks one might say. Continuing this disturbing trend, teen model and wannabe journalist/pro Zonka player, Vicky "No-one is interested in me" Coren who apparently after a year where the Zonka Gods have not been kind to her, has had to sell her property in riga to buy in to the event, is under the gun with just an average stack. Let's hope she wins.

Dealing this fearsome foursome is the Pierluigi Collina of Zonka, the man they simply call "Cock Nose" and who was known as Gonzo, but who since the introduction of Zonka they've started to call Zongo. Like Collina, who knew how to make a good booking, Zongo is an expert in his field - dealing the game of Zonka. His signature move is hoovering discards with his hooter.

Who won? Nobody knows.

Review: Bugsys Club

Join Bugsys

As mentioned before, for the past 4 months I have been playing at Bugsys Club. An online poker room endorsed by Mark and Tina Napolitano founders of PokerPages.com and PokerSchoolOnline.com.

Being a winner of the October, November and December 2004 Bugsys Club Mini Leagues, and currently top of Al's Smag & Grab League, I have played there enough to give you a review.

Lobby (top left), Tourney result window (top right), League webpage (bottom left), Table (click on image to expand).

Bugsys Club stands out from other online poker rooms for several reasons:

1. Software/Graphics: Makes it very easy to see where you stand and focus on playing poker. Players, chips, rake, pot, buttons, check boxes, all clearly visible. The notes function could be better - you cannot have more than one notes box open at the same time and the box itself opens up too small; hand history and statistics just a click away. You can also play 10 tables at the same time!

2. Community: Lots of regular players makes you feel part of a "family". Decent forum to back it up. Hardly any abusive players - just stay away from TwoBitPunk and his side kick gotoguy. LOL.

3. Pokerpages/PokerSchool: When you login you, you have access to three tabs: Freeplay (PokerPages), PokerSchool Online and Bugsys Club. Play any game for free in Freeplay, subscribe to PokerSchool for tutorials and live tests, and play for real at Bugsys Club. These 3 options make it an attractive place for beginners since you can just have fun playing, learn how play or, even better, try to earn whilst playing!

DaMatrix Rating: A

Top site for beginners aswell as experienced poker players.

BSC249 went on to finish 43rd

Congratulations to ssaandra123 for winning the shootout and $3,094!

At the time I couln't believe the call by BSC249. On further analysis, considering the pot, his decision to call wasn't such a bad one - theoretically.

But, calling all in early in a tournament for no +EV isn't a wise thing to do (On the flop of Kc9s6s. The AsKh v KsTs match up is 57.8/42.2%. The call was 10,950 to win 14,500, for a total pot of 25,450) .

What could I have done differently?

Flat called the 500 bet on the flop waiting for a blank (no spade) on the turn. With the 7d turn, the match up would of been 68.2/31.8%. Surely he would not have called an all-in here....would he?

Devilfish gets DaMatrixed

I won a £5,000 seat to my first major live tournament in Summer 2004 by beating 201 other players in a $10+1 Rebuy and Add-on satellite. The remarkable thing was that I did it without any rebuys or add-on!

Before our table began, I introduced myself to Dave "The Devilfish" Ulliot at the bar and I told him that I would be at his table; he said, "I feel sorry for you!". Ironically, I was the one to send the Devilfish to an early bath after cracking his pocket Aces with KdQd. I earned my nickname at this tournament from the Devilfish himself who kept referring me as the Matrix whenever I was involved in a pot - probably because he couldn't put a read on me ;)

In the crucial hand, I called a single raise from the Devilfish in early position with KQs - the best hand I'd had in a while. The flop was Q high, 2 rags, rainbow but giving me a backdoor flush possibility. Devilfish goes all in for the rest of his chips. The heat was now on me with 2 players yet to act. Did he flop a set(QQ), preflop raised with AQ for half his stack or have overcards(KK or AA)?

I ignored the first two possibilities since I held a Q. And out of KK and AA I swayed towards AA since I held a K too. Another reason why I put him on AA was that he started adjusting his tie during the hand. Before the tournament, a relative had given me a lucky tie to wear. I told my friends that if I was dealt AA I would adjust my tie so that they would know. In the tournament, I was dealt AA early when the blinds were low, and in fact had to lay it down on the turn with two tens on the board. Nevertheless, I believe Devilfish picked that up (he wasn't in the hand so was able to observe us closely) and had read me for AA hence associated it as the "tie tell". When I laid my hand against my opponent (John McCririck of all people), Devilfish said "Good fold. He definately had a Ten". So I was happy, even though Mr McCririck wasn't telling!

Devilfish and the "Tie Tell".

Going back to the hand and the "Tie Tell" - did Devilfish try to telegraph to me what he had? Nevertheless, when he referred to me as the Matrix again, I thought I had to call now for about a a third of my stack. Didn't raise to knock the others players out just in case I didn't improve against Devilfish if he really had AA. I hoped one or both of the players behind me would call so that I could either win a bigger pot if I improved/was ahead or build a side pot worth winning on the turn.

DaMatrix Calls.

Only one of the other 2 players yet to act called and I was very happy to see a King come on the turn giving me top two pair. Would of been equally as happy if a diamond came giving me a flush draw. But, now I was sure I was ahead, and made a small bet to try and get even more money in the already substantial pot, the other player folded though. The tournament director asked us to turn over our cards on their backs. I turn over my KQs - Devilfish turns over AA. Leaving him with 8 outs and a 18% chance of winning on the river.

Unfortunatelly for him the river gave me a full house and the Devilfish went home in a box.

Devilfish not so devilish anymore.

VC Poker Cup: Preliminaries

The 100 players were split into 5 tables of 10 over 2 days. The winner of each 10-player s&g would take part in the final table. Below are the table winners and the players they beat once it got to the heads up stage.

DAY1

WINNER 1: Ram Vaswani beat Warren Wooldridge

Ram

WINNER 2: Sean Murphy beat Bruce Atkinson

WINNER 3: Joe Beevers beat online qualifier

WINNER 4: John Kabbaj beat Ronald Fanelli

WINNER 5: Gary Bush beat S A Sorenson

DAY2:

WINNER 1: Julian Gardner beat Unknown

WINNER 2: Ross Boatman beat Grub Smith

WINNER 3: Rowan McIntyre beat Noli Francisco

DaMatrix finished 4th - Made a couple of errors. Knocked out Devilfish to become the table chip leader. Could have then knocked both Rowan and Noli out when I was the chip leader. Left Noli with some chips when I had AQ and he had AJ and we both hit two pair. Mucked JJ against Rowan on a 55T flop after he went all in and he probably had nothing. In the end I went all in preflop with K9 but Rowan called from the BB with A9.

WINNER 4: Harry Demetriou beat Donnacha O'Dea

WINNER 5: Paul Lecky beat Vicky Coren
